What would it mean to feel at home in yourself and in your relationships?

Let's find out together. I offer affordable therapy to individuals and couples. I see clients virtually across Ontario, and in person near Christie station in downtown Toronto.

The work

I believe that the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. Together, we'll cultivate the self-awareness, compassion, and skills to build relationships, including with yourself, that align with your values, hopes, and desires. No matter what you are struggling with, I can support you to come into better connection with yourself and your inner world, so you may feel choice in how you show up in your external world.

Who I work with

Over the course of my career in community mental health and therapy, I have worked with individuals and couples of diverse ages, racial backgrounds, gender expressions, sexual orientations, political and religious affiliations, nationalities, (dis)abilities, and socioeconomic status.

Common challenges that I support clients with include anxiety, depression, complex/developmental trauma, grief and loss, substance use and addiction, perfectionism, self-esteem, and relationship distress related to infidelity, intimacy issues, parenting, and more.

Philosophy

I believe that the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. That includes the relationship you have with yourself. My work is rooted in helping you build connections, inward and outward, that reflect your real values and desires. I work to understand the unique world that each of my client's inhabits so that I can support them in ways that are relevant and meaningful. I am queer and trans-affirming, sex and kink positive, and take a harm reduction approach.

As a human, I want to help in building a world that is ever more just and healthy for all. I've spent many years organizing around issues of social, economic, and racial justice, and this helps me connect our individual struggles with larger social systems. Healing ourselves means healing the world around us. I see this work as political.

As a result of my own lived experience of mental health struggles, alienation, and disconnection—from both self and others—I know how scary it can feel to reach out and ask for help. If you decide to reach out, you can expect a kind, timely, and compassionate response.

Although my approach differs with each person I work with, I typically draw from the following types of therapy:

What to expect

Your first session

We'll talk about what's bringing you in, what you're hoping for, and how you got to where you are. It's a chance for you to start sharing your story and for me to understand how I can best support you. If you're coming as a couple, I will hear from both of you. Together, we will start to map out where the stuck points, strengths, and needs are in your relationship.

Ongoing work

Most individual sessions are 50 minutes. More than half of the couples I work with choose to do 80 minute sessions. After the first couples therapy session, I will see both partners individually, and then return to joint work. The majority of individuals see me every week or two, though the pace is up to you. Most couples see me every week. Results, momentum, and change are easier to sustain with consistent sessions. Over time, this rhythm usually slows, until people feel ready to stop our work—confident that they have the skills and awareness to carry on without regular therapy.

Insurance & coverage

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. Coverage varies by provider and plan, so I'd recommend checking directly with your insurer. I do not offer direct billing to insurance. You will receive a receipt for each session that you can submit for reimbursement, as applicable.

Background

My formal education includes a master's degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto, a Certificate in Psychology from the Toronto Metropolitan University, and completion of specialized training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and the Gottman therapy method. I engage in on-going professional development focused on couples, addictions, trauma, their intersections, and much more. In what feels like a previous life, I have also earned an undergraduate degree in urban studies and a master's degree in international development.

Before entering private practice, I worked in community mental health, supporting clients with significant trauma, addictions, mental illness, and relational ruptures as an overdose response and community health worker at multiple supervised consumption sites. Through this (and community organizing) work I have learned how to be with people amidst intense suffering, without needing to rush them along in their process.

I bring this combination of clinical education and experience building connection across significant difference to every session. I relentlessly seek to understand the good—or at least understandable—reasons people do the things they do, even when those decisions have damaging consequences (to self or other). Only when those parts of us feel understood can we feel safe or hopeful enough to make more values-aligned choices.

I personally know how arduous this shift can be, and the life-long work it requires to make sustainable. I have had to learn how to put down overachievement as a substitute for genuine self-esteem and to soften the harshest edges of a patriarchal masculinity to truly experience intimacy. I use this experience to walk humbly alongside, not ahead of, clients as they move towards their own goals and transformation.

Thank you for reaching out. Nik will be in touch within a few days to find a time that works.

Location

In person sessions are held at an office steps from Christie TTC station. Virtual sessions are available to clients anywhere in Ontario.

What happens next

After you reach out, I will respond to offer date/time options to schedule a consult. If you are looking for couples therapy, I will need to meet with both partners. You will tell me about what is bringing you to therapy, about any prior experience in therapy, and what success would look like for you. I will tell you more about my practice and give you a chance to ask any questions.

Response time

I typically respond the same or next business day. I do not offer crisis services. If you need immediate support, please contact a crisis line or visit an emergency room.
